Der Schimmelreiter by Theodor Storm

The novella, at the centre of which is the fictional dike count Hauke Haien, is based on a legend that Theodor Storm has been working on for decades. It is about the life story of Hauke Haien, which the schoolmaster of a village tells a rider in an inn. The dikes in North Friesland, the scene of the story, play an important role in Hauke's life.
